Diary Data (2026-06-17_data_hoarding.txt)
Hey, iDestyKK here. With my birthday coming up on June 19th, I figured to write about a "philosophy" that I hold. I don't really have a plan with this diary entry so I might ramble. Bear with me. DERPGI own the DERPG Youtube channel. As of posting this, there are 530 published videos on there. But did you know there are over 10,000 unlisted videos on there? It's an archive of all of the gameplay that I have ever done since 2011. Every single match of Call of Duty. Every single Rockman game I've played. And so on. But, I don't just upload to YouTube. I also keep all of the video files on a 100+ TB JBOD server. Archival is very important to me. There is no such thing as the delete button for me. I mention this because it gives me opportunities to make some really cool content automatically with FFmpeg and Bash. I can make CSV files that define specific moments in video files, then comb through that file in Bash and generate a compilation video. Here is an example of one: So it isn't like I am just hoarding a lot of content. There is an actual "practical" use to archiving content like this. Alternate forms of video filesDespite having 100+ TB of space, I am careful and considerate of my storage. As such, some video projects are stored in replay/demo formats instead of a massive video file. Some games or emulators allow you to toss in a replay file and it will replay your gameplay and generate a video for you. This is how things were done back in the 90s with DOOM, Quake, and Half-Life. In fact, my entire Half-Life: Christmas Deathmatch archive is in demo format. So I can always go back and export those videos in any format or resolution I wish in the future. So what's coming up next?I have a blog post coming up of a new yearly project I am working on. It's called "Block Block: The Semi-Optimised Run". In this blog post, I detail, yet again, taking a bunch of archived videos and generating a compilation video of sorts to upload to YouTube. The video is already up. You can watch it here a few days early if you like: The blog post I linked up above details the production procedure of video. How it was essentially generated automatically from 20 other videos that we recorded over the course of 2024-2025. FFmpeg is very powerful in the right hands. None of this was done with a video editor at all. ConclusionI'll keep this post short. Just wanted to lightly nerd out about archival and what I can do with the content I have in my "vault". There is potential for a lot of cool video projects. I just have to dig around and see what I can do. Who knows. Maybe I'll make some MWIII clip videos public in the future. I'll be releasing a couple of things on my birthday. So look forward to that. |
